WOW! That’s first thing I said when the credits rolled. Yes, it truly was that good. Going in I had high expectations being a HUGE Iron Man fan and clearly it lived up to (and in some cases) surpassed those expectations!
Robert Downey Jr. plays the snarky, rich, playboy; Tony Stark turned Iron Man. He doesn’t “act” like Iron Man as much as he IS Iron Man.
While in Afghanistan displaying some weapons from his own company, Stark Industries, he’s taken capture where he discovers these dudes are using his weapons, thus causing him to turn his heart to a more righteous cause.
This change follows the development of ‘Iron Man’, which lasts for the first half of the movie and is the best part of the movie, not to say the rest is bad! Making Stark a more likable to geeks we find out he truly is a geek with rich playboy side. He loves developing new pieces of electronics, robots, and of course weapons
The characters in this movie are more relatable then that of most superhero movies. Like Batman, IRON MAN is based in the real world and doesn’t have mutated spiders biting someone and can now climb walls. I mean, is that hard to relate to a billionaire who develops an awesome suit of armor that allows him to fly at break neck speeds and stop on the edge of a dime?
Rather than sounding out of place Gwyneth Paltrow is great as Stark’s “girl next door” assistant Pepper Potts. Jeff Bridges is quite good as Obadiah Stane but I kept expecting him to mix up a White Russian, and go bowling for some reason.
Iron Man doesn’t become your typical superhero movie until the half way mark. It gives the characters time to develop and time for the relationships to form. The second half however falls into the cookie cutter superhero movie.
The snarky one-liners that Downey Jr. spits out are brilliantly delivered and instead of waiting for the rim shot I found myself laughing quite frequently.
I can honestly say without hesitation the first summer blockbuster is here, and I loved it. Will it be the best superhero movie on theatres this year? Maybe, maybe not, but I can guarantee you’ll have a blast watching it.
Oh! I should also mention that there is a 40-second clip after the credits that was excluded from the press screening. I hear it’s worth sticking around for so be sure to catch that!
