As an avid Batman fan, the idea behind Merry Little Batman intrigued me after I saw the previews. I didn’t know what to expect. The animation was wildly different than anything I’ve seen WB Animation put out and Batman had a softer voice (provided by Luke Wilson).
I was a little apprehensive to watch when Amazon Prime sent me the screener. I didn’t want to be disappointed. Much to my surprise it only took a few minutes until I had a smile on my face. WB Animation and Prime may have unexpectedly released a new Christmas movie I will be watching yearly.
The story follows Damian, Bruce’s son, who is obsessed with becoming Batman. When he gets a utility belt for Christmas his desire ramps up until a burglary sees it stolen. With Bat dad called away for Justice League business Damien sets out to get back his gift.
What this movie does is capture the spirit of every kid who’s wanted to be Batman. My earlier memory of Batman was around 3 to 4 years old when I dressed as Batman for Halloween (at least the only picture if from Halloween… I’ve heard I wore the custome a lot more).
The voice acting is great. The animation style is unique and my only criticism is Bane’s style. While fitting the aesthetic of the rest of the movie the neck looks a little, well, weird. The storyline is a hoot and there is a lot of humour and joy throughout the movie.
Has a new Christmas Classic been born? Only time will tell, but I can tell you that I, at least, will be watching the escapades of Damian Wayne yearly as Merry Little Batman is an absolute joy to watch.
