It was the last day in March and everyone was tossing up their April fools jokes as quickly as possible. A little news tidbit hit the web that no one took truly seriously despite the author saying “this is not an April Fool’s joke”. Nobody is laughing today after Deadline and Variety both confirmed the scoop from IESB.
It appears as though Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to tackle the directing chair for the upcoming Marvel film The Avengers. Variety also notes that Whedon will be reworking the script originally written by Zack Penn.

With Joss being a comic writer for some of Marvel’s best selling lines it seems almost a no brainer to have him rework the script. As for directing, there is no doubt in mind that Joss knows what he’s doing. Just look at Serenity, or any of the several episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its spinoff Angel, and Firefly, Dollhouse he directed.
Joss has a talent for directing ensembles and with The Avengers being just that I have no doubt Joss will bring us a decent film, but will it be great?
The Avengers consist of Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Thor, and on occasion The Incredible Hulk along with Hank Pym (Ant-Man) and Wasp. All but the latter two have had a movie, been in a movie, or are currently having a movie made about them.
With this news I wonder how much say Joss will have in Captain America: The First Avenger? After all, he’s the one who must bridge the gap between all these characters and get them on screen together.
Thoughts?

P.S. While searching for the perfect photo I found this decently made fan made poster. Although, I’m not convinced that Brad Pitt should have ever been considered for Captain America. I also believe that is Johnny Depp as Ant-Man.
