FUTURAMA- (Episodes 1201 – 1206) | Review

Full disclosure, I’m a The Simpsons series addict. I grew up in Springfield with Bart and the rest of the Simpson gang. Matt Groening, James L. Brooks and Sam Simon hold a dear spot in my heart. Many were skeptical when word in 1999 broke that Groening was doing a new animated series. Could lightning strike twice? could Groening and other writers create a futuristic world that would feel like home? Well, here we are in 2024 talking about season twelve of the space sitcom. The thing about both The Simpsons and Futurama is the family can enjoy it together. Sure, some of the material is more adult-oriented, the kids will enjoy the goofy characters and their adventures.

Due to certain restrictions, No spoilers on the six episodes Disney sent over. Still, I can tell you that if you’re already a fan of Bender, Philip J. Fry and Turanga Leela, you won’t be disappointed. It’s also worth noting that all the original voice actors are back, so you’ll hear Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio and more, ready to work their way through space. Everything about the episodes felt natural, topical and fun. The timing of some of the topics might feel a little late to the party, but they are fresh and full of laughter.

When Futurama came out in 1999 the landscape of television viewing was different. There weren’t as many animated offerings from multiple cable companies. Sure Saturday morning cartoons were around, but nothing like the more adult The Simpsons and Futurama. Futurama now has to compete with many more grown-up animated shows like Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty, the list goes on. Will fans new and old stick around for the adventures that lay in season twelve, well if season eleven taught us anything the answer is an emphatic yes!

The characters not only sound like they should but they are also animated to perfection. Lok-Mon Chan, Kelly Anne Rodak and their respective departments deserve high praise. It’s easy to get lost in the universe with this collection of characters, this is mainly to the animation.

So prepare to have some laughs and maybe become a new fan of this everlasting adventure when Futurama Season 12
Premieres on Disney+ in Canada July 29, 2024
