We’re a third (minus a day) of the way through October, so of course the logical choice would be the 1978 classic, Halloween. The night he came home! Michael returns to Haddonfield fifteen years later wrecking havoc on the town, causing chaos, returning to his murderous ways. The master John Carpenter directs and writes this masterpiece with his partner Debra Hill. If somehow you’ve never seen Halloween, do yourself a favour and watch this classic horror slasher.
The movie focuses on Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) as she is baby sitting a child, and her friends across the street are taking some pleasures in each other. Throughout the night creepy things start happening as The Shape played by Nick Castle starts his spree. He escaped the mental institution he was locked in, and Dr. Loomis played by Donald Pleasence tries to hunt him down and bring him to justice. While on the run, The Shape FKA Michael Myers, hunts his new victims and kills them one by one. Laurie goes head to head with The Shape throughout the movie, managing to escape him at the very last minute every time. Halloween is a classic horror film that still holds up to this day.
Jamie Lee Curtis whose mother was Janet Leigh, has been dubbed one of the original scream queens. Her classic shriek of terror was captivating and haunting, but her ability to continue to escape The Shape is truly admirable and brings the trope of the final girl to the forefront. Everything in Halloween is captivating, the performances are astonishing, the thrills are exciting, and the score is haunting. Halloween is one of the very few perfect Halloween movies to exist, not the franchise but the holiday season in of itself.
Halloween 1978, is a modern staple in any October watch, and should be seen as part of cinema history. Even though The Shape and Michael Myers changes actors throughout the years, there is never a dull moment in the first film. Truly a film that changes the film landscape.
