The horror hit BUDDY is showing no signs of slowing down. The bright orange unicorn at the center of the self-titled film continues to build momentum at the box office, delivering another impressive weekend and rapidly expanding its audience.
The Roadside Attractions and Saban Films release earned an estimated $7,305,343 over the four-day Labour Day weekend, bringing its domestic cumulative total to $15,822,917 from 1,771 theatres.
Even more impressively, BUDDY is becoming one of the year’s rare theatrical releases to grow rather than decline in its second weekend.

BUDDY Defies the Traditional Box Office Drop
Following its breakout opening, BUDDY earned $5,363,827 from just 1,258 theaters, more than doubling initial projections.
Its Labor Day performance now gives the horror film an even larger footprint, expanding from 1,258 to 1,771 locations while continuing to attract audiences.
According to the film’s release, BUDDY delivered the biggest opening of 2026 for a movie playing fewer than 1,800 screens—an especially notable achievement for an independent, non-franchise, R-rated horror movie.
The film is also being touted as Roadside Attractions’ biggest opening since the pandemic and the company’s second-highest opening in its 23-year history. For Saban Films, it represents the distributor’s highest opening in its 12-year history.
Could BUDDY Become the Next Terrifier 2?
The film’s unusual box-office trajectory is already drawing comparisons to Terrifier 2, another independent horror success that developed into a theatrical phenomenon through strong word-of-mouth and increasingly passionate fandom.
Brad Miska of Dread Central believes BUDDY could be entering similar territory.
“There’s a moment when a movie stops being something people are merely going to see and starts becoming something people feel like they need to participate in.”
Miska added that he believes BUDDY is entering “Terrifier 2 territory” and predicted that the film could increase again next weekend.
That would be another remarkable development for a movie that began with a relatively modest theater count.
BUDDY’s Fandom Has Exploded
The box office isn’t the only area where BUDDY is experiencing extraordinary growth.
In just one week, the film claims to have more than doubled its social-media following, surpassing the one-million-follower milestone across its various platforms.

Footage of the incident exploded across social media, generating five million views across BUDDY’s own social platforms and more than 10 million views worldwide, according to the film’s release.
It’s exactly the kind of unconventional publicity that fits the movie’s increasingly strange cultural footprint.
Rather than functioning simply as advertising for a horror movie, BUDDY himself is becoming an online character with a growing fanbase.

Is BUDDY worth seeing ?
All indications point to yes, which is good news for horror fans. Although the plot may become very apparent where it is going after about 30 minutes, the movie is rated highly by many reviewers. I have yet to see it, so I can’t speak on that, but I can say it feels fresh from the little I’ve seen.
