BUgonia is a 2025 satirical absurdist science fiction black comedy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with a screenplay by Will Tracy. Serving as an English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s cult 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, the film blends Lanthimos’s trademark surrealism and unsettling humour with the original’s mix of paranoia, tragedy, and biting social commentary.
The story follows two disillusioned young men who, convinced that the fate of humanity is at stake, kidnap a ruthless corporate CEO. Believing she is in fact an alien conspirator orchestrating Earth’s downfall, the pair plunge into a warped interrogation that blurs the line between delusion and reality. As the situation escalates, the film unfolds as both a pitch-black comedy and a razor-edged allegory about power, fear, and the human tendency toward self-destruction.
The ensemble cast features Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. An Irish–South Korean–American co-production, Ugonia carries the DNA of both its international origins and Lanthimos’s distinct vision, promising a bizarre, unsettling, and darkly funny exploration of obsession and survival.
