Disney Reveals First Teaser for ‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ as Awkwafina Joins the Cast

The world of Auradon is about to get even stranger.

Disney has officially unveiled the first teaser for “Descendants: Wicked Wonderland,“ the next chapter in the wildly popular Descendants franchise. Alongside the new footage, Disney also confirmed the film’s premiere date, released new poster artwork, and announced that acclaimed actress and comedian Awkwafina has joined the cast as the mysterious Chessy the Cat.

“Descendants: Wicked Wonderland” premieres July 16 on Disney Channel and begins streaming July 17 on Disney+.

A New Villain Emerges in Wonderland

After the events of Descendants: The Rise of Red, life appears to be finally settling down. The Queen of Hearts has changed her ways, Cinderella is safe, and best friends Red and Chloe seem to have successfully rewritten history.

But their actions have created unintended consequences.

A new threat emerges in the form of Maddox Hatter, whose plans throw Wonderland into chaos after he captures the Queen of Hearts. To save her, Red and Chloe must assemble an unlikely team of allies and journey back into the unpredictable world of Wonderland.

Alongside them are:

• Pink, Red’s newly introduced sister
• Luis Madrigal, son of Luisa Madrigal
• Hazel Hook, daughter of Captain Hook
• Max Hatter, son of Maddox Hatter

Behind the Camera

The film is directed by Kimmy Gatewood, known for her work on Muppets Mayhem.

The screenplay comes from Tamara Chestna, Dan Frey, and Ru Sommer, while longtime franchise producers Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh return as executive producers.

Bringing the franchise’s signature musical energy back to life is Emmy Award-winning choreographer Emilio Dosal, whose previous work includes Wicked and Sneakerella.

A Franchise That Continues to Grow

Since the original Descendants debuted in 2015, the franchise has become one of Disney’s biggest youth entertainment successes. Each of the first three films ranked among the most-watched cable movies of their respective years, while the franchise has generated nearly one billion hours of viewing across television and streaming platforms in the United States.

The popularity continued in 2025 with the sold-out Descendants/ZOMBIES Worlds Collide Tour, which visited more than 40 arenas across North America.

New Music and Merchandise on the Way

Fans won’t have to wait long for new music from the film.

The “Descendants: Wicked Wonderland” Original Soundtrack will be released on July 17 through Walt Disney Records.
