Premieres September 16, 2026, Only on Paramount+

Some amazing news for retro video game fans: dust off those old game cartridges and prepare yourselves for Golden Axe, the animated TV show.
The legendary warriors of Yuria are back for another battle against evil in GOLDEN AXE, a new animated series inspired by SEGA’s iconic 1989 video game. Bringing together fantasy adventure, comedy and plenty of sword-and-sorcery action, the series follows three veteran heroes as they once again face the seemingly unstoppable Death Adder.
But this time, they have an unlikely new companion, and he may be their biggest problem yet.
The Plot
Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead have fought their share of battles, but their latest mission may be their most dangerous yet.
The legendary warriors reunite to protect the kingdom of Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who has an unfortunate habit of returning from the dead. Just when the heroes think they have defeated him for good, Death Adder finds another way to threaten the land.
Fortunately—or perhaps unfortunately—the warriors have an unexpected new ally.
Hampton Squib is an inexperienced adventurer whose dreams of becoming a legendary hero are considerably bigger than his actual abilities. Thrown into a dangerous quest alongside three battle-hardened warriors, Hampton has plenty to learn if he hopes to survive.
The unlikely group must overcome their differences, their individual flaws and Death Adder’s latest attempt to conquer Yuria before the evil giant can finally claim victory.

A New Take on the Classic SEGA Game
Inspired by the beloved 1989 SEGA video game, GOLDEN AXE brings the characters and fantasy world of the original franchise into a new animated format.
Fans of the game will recognize Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, Gilius Thunderhead, Death Adder and the kingdom of Yuria, while the addition of Hampton Squib gives the series a new character through whom audiences can experience this fantastical world.
The series also appears to embrace the irreverent humor that comes from putting an inexperienced adventurer alongside three legendary warriors who have very little patience for incompetence.

Voice Cast
The voice cast features a talented ensemble bringing the classic characters to life:
- Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler
- Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare
- Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead
- Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib
- Carl Tart as Chronos ‘Evil’ Lait
The pairing of Danny Pudi’s comedic sensibilities with veteran fantasy performer Liam McIntyre and the rest of the ensemble should give the series plenty of personality.
Creators
GOLDEN AXE is created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler.
McMahan’s involvement brings an established background in animated comedy, making the combination of fantasy action and humor particularly fitting for this new interpretation of the SEGA property.
What to Expect From Golden Axe
While the original Golden Axe was known for its side-scrolling hack-and-slash gameplay and sword-and-sorcery setting, the new series expands that world into an animated adventure built around its legendary heroes.
At its heart, the series is about an unlikely group of warriors being forced to work together. Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead already know what they’re doing, but Hampton Squib has a lot to prove.
That clash of personalities should provide plenty of comedic moments alongside the show’s larger fantasy battles.
