I feel pretty lucky to have gotten an early review sent to me by someone who was at a test screening of Goon 2. CanadianIce, as our screener wants to be known by, has positive things to say about the film.
Let me just post his review here:
Everyone loves the underdog but not everyone loves a sequel… I’m always skeptical about watching a comedy sequel. Will I get rehashed jokes? Will it bring anything new? Goon 2 , or Goon 1 for that matter, doesn’t intend on telling you a compelling story. It is a semi slap stick comedy using the classic ‘underdog’ story. When watching a movie like this, I try to analyse it on a fairly simple level… did it make me laugh? To that respect, yes it did. This genre of movie may not be for everyone but for those that love a good sports themed comedy, it delivers on some laughs. If you are looking for a compelling story, you should probably look elsewhere.
What I liked? Most of the characters from the previous Goon movie made it’s return. I enjoy the actors in this film and they do a good job in making their characters lovable. You can’t help but root for the guys you should be rooting for. I can’t say enough about Seann William Scott… he’s plays the most modest hard working team player and he plays it tremendously. He feels like an everyday guy you can relate to, just trying to make the best with what he has.As far as the overall movie itself, it is crude, violent, and has absurd moments at times but is well put together. Hockey isn’t an easy nor polite sport and they sure don’t sugar coat the experience for you. That is where this movie excels. It spins the behind the scenes locker room walk and talk into a funny experience. What I disliked?Given it is a sequel, there isn’t much of a new feel to it. Given the subject matter, it would be tough to really put a new spin on things… what next, Doug goes to play in the KHL? They take what they have and work with it… showing a story a little further down than line than where we would have left off in Goon.I’m not big into a lot of gore in films and it isn’t too bad, but there was one scene I semi cringed at. Minor thing.Final ThoughtsOverall, if you take into perspective the type of movie you are watching and the objective, it is a great movie. Although it may not appeal to everyone, if you like the gory, semi slapstick, and underdog story… you won’t be disappointed.
