Set against the lasting consequences of China’s one-child policy, La città proibita (The Forbidden City) follows Mei (Yaxi Liu), a fiercely trained young woman who travels to Rome in search of her missing sister, Yun (Haijin Ye). What begins as a desperate family mission quickly becomes a dangerous journey into the city’s hidden underworld.
Mei’s search leads her into Esquilino, Rome’s Chinatown neighbourhood, where she uncovers a criminal network operating behind the façade of restaurants and local businesses. As she pushes for answers, she draws the attention of powerful figures who will do anything to keep their secrets buried.
Her investigation soon collides with Marcello (Enrico Borello), a man connected to a nearby family-run trattoria whose own life has been shaped by disappearance, debt, and local crime. Though their worlds couldn’t be more different, the two become unwillingly entangled in a conflict involving rival factions, underground exploitation, and a past that refuses to stay hidden.
With danger closing in from every direction, Mei must rely on her strength, discipline, and survival instincts to uncover the truth—before she becomes the next target.
