IP MAN: KUNG FU LEGEND (2026) 4K Ultra HD Review – A Familiar Journey That Struggles to Leave Its Mark
Movie Review
On July 14, 2026, Well Go USA Entertainment releases IP MAN: KUNG FU LEGEND on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The film marks Dennis To’s fourth portrayal of legendary Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man, a role made internationally famous through the acclaimed Donnie Yen-led franchise.
Directed by Li Liming, the film serves as a sequel to 2019’s Ip Man: Kung Fu Master and follows Ip Man as he leaves behind his police career to establish his own martial arts school. However, when a Western boxing gym attempts to dominate the local martial arts community and a murder accusation places him in the crosshairs of the law, Ip Man must fight to clear his name while protecting his community from corrupt officials, criminal triads, and foreign interests.
The question many fans will inevitably ask is: how does this latest chapter compare to the many Ip Man films that came before it?
Unfortunately, that’s where the film begins to stumble.
The story unfolds at a noticeably slower pace than previous entries and often feels like a collection of familiar martial arts movie tropes rather than a fresh exploration of Ip Man’s life. To be fair, many of the most fascinating chapters of the real-life grandmaster’s story have already been covered in earlier films, leaving this installment searching for new ground.
The narrative leans heavily into classic kung fu movie conventions. There’s the wrongly accused hero, corrupt police officers, criminal conspiracies, and an over-the-top villain who occasionally borders on cartoonish. While longtime fans of old-school martial arts cinema may appreciate these familiar elements, they rarely feel compelling enough to elevate the story.
That said, the film isn’t without its strengths.
Dennis To remains a solid choice for the role. Having trained under Ip Man’s son, he brings an authenticity and respect to the character that is difficult to ignore. He captures many of the master’s mannerisms and physical presence remarkably well. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t give him enough opportunities to truly showcase his martial arts abilities.
The fight choreography is often exciting, but the presentation becomes a mixed bag. Frequent slow-motion shots and rapid editing occasionally rob the action of its impact. Ironically, the film’s strongest moments occur when the camera simply allows To to perform at full speed. These sequences showcase his skill and remind viewers why he remains one of the better on-screen interpretations of Ip Man.
Comparisons to Donnie Yen’s portrayal are unavoidable, but ultimately unfair. Yen’s version became the definitive cinematic representation of the martial arts master, setting a nearly impossible standard. Dennis To brings his own strengths to the role, but the film itself never provides him with material strong enough to step out from under that shadow.
Ultimately, IP MAN: KUNG FU LEGEND feels more like a retread of familiar territory than a meaningful addition to the franchise. While it’s certainly watchable, it never fully justifies its existence beyond offering fans another chance to spend time with the iconic martial arts legend.

Video Review
Visually, the 4K Ultra HD presentation is one of the release’s strongest assets.
Well Go USA once again delivers a sharp and attractive transfer that showcases the film’s production design, costumes, and colorful environments. Fast-moving action scenes remain stable with little noticeable ghosting or motion blur, allowing viewers to appreciate the choreography more clearly.
The inclusion of Dolby Vision significantly enhances contrast and color depth. The film’s vibrant wardrobe choices and period-inspired set pieces benefit tremendously from the format, creating a polished and cinematic presentation throughout.
For home theater enthusiasts, this is another impressive visual release from Well Go USA.

Audio Review
The disc features a robust Dolby Atmos track presented in Dolby TrueHD, making excellent use of surround channels throughout the film.
Action scenes are immersive, environmental effects are well distributed, and the score fills the soundstage nicely. The Atmos mix consistently creates a spacious listening experience that enhances the martial arts action.
The English dub, however, is a different story.
While dubbed martial arts films have always carried a certain nostalgic charm, the English-language track here often feels exaggerated and unintentionally comedic. Some vocal performances border on parody, and one supporting character sounds remarkably similar to a Sean Connery impersonation.
For the best viewing experience, the original Mandarin-language track is highly recommended.

Special Features
Unfortunately, this release arrives with no bonus features.
This is a disappointing omission, particularly for martial arts fans who often enjoy behind-the-scenes looks at stunt work, fight choreography, training regimens, and production design. Given the film’s action-heavy nature, a making-of featurette could have added significant value to the package.

Final Thoughts
IP MAN: KUNG FU LEGEND isn’t a bad film; it simply struggles to stand out in a franchise that has already delivered several superior entries.
Dennis To remains a compelling presence as Ip Man and demonstrates genuine respect for the role, but the screenplay and familiar story beats limit his ability to make a lasting impression. The action is entertaining when allowed to breathe, and the film’s visual presentation on 4K Ultra HD is undeniably impressive.
The Dolby Vision-enhanced transfer and strong Dolby Atmos mix make this release worthwhile for dedicated collectors and martial arts enthusiasts. However, the lack of special features and a story that rarely breaks new ground prevent it from reaching the heights of its predecessors.
Fans of Ip Man and classic kung fu cinema will still find enough here to justify a viewing, but casual audiences may find themselves wishing for a stronger reason to revisit this legendary martial arts icon.
