Avengers: Doomsday Unites the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Wakandans in Marvel Studios’ Epic Crossover

Doomsday arrives in theatres on December 18.

Marvel Studios is bringing together the largest collection of superheroes in Marvel Cinematic Universe history with Avengers: Doomsday, the highly anticipated sequel to Avengers: Endgame and the 39th film in the MCU.

Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, with a screenplay by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, the blockbuster features an unprecedented ensemble cast led by Robert Downey Jr., who returns to the Marvel Universe—not as Iron Man, but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom.

Produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO, Avengers: Doomsday sees heroes from across multiple universes unite for a battle that could determine the fate of the Multiverse.

Avengers: Doomsday Plot Synopsis

Following the events that reshaped reality across the Multiverse, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face their greatest threat yet when the brilliant and ruthless Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, emerges with ambitions that extend far beyond a single universe.

As Doom’s power grows, heroes from across the Marvel Multiverse—including the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the warriors of Wakanda—must put aside their differences and unite against an enemy unlike any they have faced before.

The fate of countless realities hangs in the balance as familiar heroes, legendary mutants, and Marvel’s First Family collide in what promises to be one of the MCU’s most ambitious and consequential stories.

Robert Downey Jr. Reinvents Himself as Doctor Doom

One of the film’s biggest surprises is the return of Robert Downey Jr., who spent more than a decade portraying Tony Stark/Iron Man. This time, he steps into the role of Victor von Doom, one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic villains.

According to Anthony and Joe Russo, Doctor Doom’s immense power, intelligence, and emotional complexity made him the perfect character to anchor the next chapter of the MCU. Downey reportedly developed an extensive backstory for Doom, contributed ideas for the character’s costume design, and performs the role using a distinctive, heavily accented voice.

The Return of Marvel Legends

Avengers: Doomsday also marks the return of several fan-favorite Marvel actors, including Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and James Marsden as Cyclops, bringing together heroes from multiple generations of Marvel films for the first time.
