Vice Press Home Video is going full cowabunga this Thursday with a VHS release that taps directly into the heart of pop-culture nostalgia: the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. For longtime fans and collectors alike, this release celebrates not just a film, but a moment in time when the Heroes in a Half Shell ruled theatres, toy aisles, and living rooms around the world.
Released in 1990, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains one of the most beloved comic book adaptations ever made. Directed by Steve Barron and produced by Golden Harvest and New Line Cinema, the film struck a rare balance between gritty realism and family-friendly adventure. Drawing heavily from the darker tone of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s original Mirage Comics, the movie gave audiences a more grounded take on Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, while still delivering humour and plenty of pizza-fueled fun.

What truly set the 1990 TMNT film apart was its revolutionary use of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop animatronics. Decades later, the Turtle suits still stand as a high watermark for practical effects, giving the characters weight, expression, and personality that modern CGI often struggles to replicate. Combined with an iconic score, memorable performances from Elias Koteas as Casey Jones and Judith Hoag as April O’Neil, and the menacing presence of Shredder, the film has aged with remarkable grace.

The return of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) to VHS format feels especially fitting. This is the way many fans first experienced the film: rewound tapes, tracking lines, and all. Vice Press Home Video’s release isn’t just about physical media; it’s about preserving the texture and warmth of a movie that defined a generation. For collectors, TMNT fans, and lovers of retro home video, this VHS drop is a loving tribute to the era when Saturday morning cartoons met gritty urban fantasy.
Here’s what VICE PRESS HOME VIDEO has to say about this release:
Last year marked the 35th anniversary of the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and after our screening at last year’s Open House, we continue the celebrations with two new releases, the original theatrical poster and the film on VHS from Vice Press Home Video!
Those of you who came to Open House, and the eagled eyed of you online, would have seen the samples of the VHS which showcased the green VHS Cassettes we created specifically for this release. The two Slipcase Editions, one featuring the original theatrical art, and one featuring Matt Ferguson’s artwork, will feature the four Turtle bandanas as spine stickers. Each order will include one random bandanna. However, if you buy more than one slipcase, we will make sure you don’t get duplicate spines.
The Collector’s Edition features a reversible sleeve, with the original theatrical artwork on one side, and alternative theatrical art to the reverse.
All three versions will include an EXCLUSIVE A3 poster by artist Matt Ferguson!
This release will only be available from Vice Press and will only be available on UK PAL format.
We are also releasing the original theatrical artwork as 24×36 inch limited edition posters in a regular edition of 300, and foil edition of 180.
Formatted by Matt Ferguson, this will be the first time this poster has been available with titles and credits!
As the Turtles continue to evolve across movies, television, and comics, the 1990 film remains a cornerstone of the franchise’s legacy. Vice Press Home Video’s cowabunga-worthy VHS release invites fans old and new to revisit where it all came together, back when the sewers of New York hid heroes, brotherhood mattered, and being a ninja turtle felt like the coolest thing in the world.
