First off, today, is an announcement from Warner Brothers, with an amendment of the street date for BARBERSHOP: SPECIAL EDITION. New street date, December 31.
Also on deck from the WB, straight-to-video flick JANE DOE, starring the very tasty Teri Hatcher, and Rob Lowe in a pic about a desperate woman who is framed for the murder of her ex-boss, and must escape execution to unravel the plot with her computer-hacker son. Produced by that WB staple Joel Silver, this one comes with a 1.85:1 Fullscreen transfer, 5.1 DDS sound, filmographies and trailers. Look for this one January 28.
Also from WB is the recent DeNiro drama CITY BY THE SEA. This one will be available in 2.35:1 in both Anamorphic Wide, or in Pan N’ Scan. Extras include director and cast commentary, an interview with director Michael Caton-Jones and more. Street date – February 18.
The Dubya also has a slate of catalogue titles raring to go on February 4. A PATCH OF BLUE with Sidney Poitier, MILDRED PIERCE starring Joan Crawford, and John Huston’s THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE. On March 18 they’ll be followed by some top-drawer foreign classics. A MAN AND A WOMAN, Truffaut’s DAY FOR NIGHT and Akira Kurosawa’s DREAMS.
Fox Home Entertainment also has a load of new catalogue releases, as well as repricings, in their next “Family Favorites” promo, coming March 25. Included in this deal are the debuts of MY FRIEND FLICKA, FAR FROM HOME: ADVENTURES OF YELLOW DOG, BUSHWACKED and the seminal 80’s classic LUCAS. LUCAS will sport a 1.85:1 AW transfer and 2.0 Dolby Surround, the others all come basic with Fullscreen transfers and 2.0 Stereo. Being repriced on the 25th, look for DUNSTON CHECKS IN, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, THE PAGEMASTER, MY BODYGUARD, BREAKING AWAY, BABY’S DAY OUT, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER and the excellent baseball flick THE SANDLOT.
Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment also have some catalogue titles making their debut this spring…
Keep your eyes open for the upcoming release of the 1980 John Cassavetes classic GLORIA, starring his wife Gena Rowlands, in one of her most memorable roles. This one comes in an Anamorphic Widescreen transfer with mono audio, filmographies and trailers. Also coming soon to a player near you is the Cary Grant film TALK OF THE TOWN in it’s original 1.37:1 Fullscreen ratio and original mono audio, with bonus trailers as an extra. Also just announced from CTHE, are the February 25th releases THE MYSTIC MASSEUR, SNIPES, MAN AND BOY and ONCE UPON A TIME. Details will be announced soon.
From Paramount Home Entertainment, we get a pair of Period dramas on February 18.
The 1986 flick LADY JANE, with Cary Elwes, Patrick Stewart and the luminous Helena Bonham Carter in the title role as the 15 year old Queen of England, is presented in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with 2.0 Dolby Surround and a still gallery.
The much more recent (read: still playing in theatres) THE FOUR FEATHERS also lands on the 18th. Directed by Shekhar Kapur and starring Heath Ledger, Kate Hudson and Wes Bentley, this one will be available in separate Fullscreen and 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen transfers, with English and French audio in 5.1 DDS. Extras will include directors commentary, a making-of do*censored*entary and six additional featurettes, as well as trailers.
Finally, our friends at MTI Home Video have announced a couple of titles for Spring. MIKE HAMMER: SONGBIRD, features Stacy Keach as the titular anti-hero, a tough and brutally honest P.I. who ends up mixing it up with a femme fatale Jazz singer in New York’s seamy underworld. The flick hits town on January 28, but no other details are available yet. Stay tuned for the skinny…
Also from MTI comes THE LEGEND OF THE PHANTOM RIDER, a Bedford Entertainment production featuring genre stars like Angus Scrimm, Denise Crosby, and Robert McRay. In this supernatural western, a mysterious man comes out of nowhere to save a town from an evil Sheriff with a haunted past. February 11, with more deets to come.
