Set in present-day Tokyo, RENTAL FAMILY follows an aimless American actor (Brendan Fraser) who unexpectedly finds new direction when he accepts a job with a Japanese “rental family” agency, an industry where performers are hired to play relatives, partners, or companions for clients in need. As he steps into these stand-in roles, he becomes deeply entangled in the lives of the people he’s paid to portray, forming emotional connections that challenge the boundary between acting and authenticity.

Through these intimate encounters, he confronts the ethical dilemmas of his unconventional work and slowly rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the profound beauty found in genuine human connection.
